  • Start using Phrases

  • Take English Speaking Classes

  • Identify Weak Areas

  • Speech Shadowing

  • Making Mistakes is Okay!

1.Learn Grammar

Grammar is the most important aspect of a language. There are hundreds of grammar rules. As a beginner, you can start with basic grammar rules. The basic grammar rules refer to sentence structure and parts of speech, including nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions.

The next step is to learn to frame a sentence. Get the words in the right order such as subject, verb, object (if present).

Eg: ‘Sara bought flowers’ is a simple sentence that contains the subject, verb and object. As a beginner, you should learn the subject, object and verb.

Once you start learning how to frame a sentence, go for tenses. Understand how you can speak about a past, present or future situation.

Eg: Sara buys flowers, Sara bought flowers, Sara will bring flowers. The three sentences are the same with the subject and object but it is present, past and future respectively.

When you learn to use the proper grammar in a sentence, you have made the first step to allow us to talk about the time when the action or state takes place. You can learn grammar by doing exercises. There are practice books for beginners to learn grammar. Take time to learn prepositions as they might confuse you at the beginning.

Eg: The most misused preposition of place is on, in, and at. Some common usages are:

On In  At
On a bus In a car At the side
On the way In a taxi At the bottom
On the left In Park street At the top
On the right In a row At the college
On a ship In the sky At reception

2.Make your own Dictionary

Make a small dictionary for yourself. Learn new words every day and try to use them in your speech. This is a good way to widen your vocabulary. Make a target to learn five to ten daily words and do not forget to use them while you speak.

Try learning words from your books, newspapers or the audio you listen to, depending on your daily habits.

3.Start using Phrases

Once you learn words, start trying to speak in phrases. Use phrases and expressions that you use every day. Learning phrases that are a larger unit of words will help to easily build sentences and conversations. Remember, chances to forget the usage of words and phrases are more when you do not use them.

Examples of some commonly used phrases that you can use as a beginner are:

  • Could you repeat that, please?

  • How does that sound?

  • That sounds great!

  • That's so true.

  • That's for sure.

  • I agree 100%

  • I couldn't agree with you more.

Find out more phrases and start using them! So, this is a step-by-step method. Try to learn words, then phrases, and then sentences. Do not forget to speak and use these sentences.

4.Take English Speaking Classes

Now that you know the basic sentence framing and tenses, a language class or spoken English classes can quickly help you improve your English learning. A language teacher can guide you through various practices and help strengthen your weak areas. And so, you can dramatically improve your speaking by having a natural conversation. With the help of a tutor, you can learn the sound of English and achieve fluency.

Utilize your classroom sessions to make conversations with your friends and teachers. Getting involved in various language-building activities will also help you improve your spoken English language skills. If you are in Abu Dhabi, attending the Spoken English course in Abu Dhabi will give you a better knowledge of the usage of language and help you learn in a shorter period.

5.Read English Books

Read your favorite book loudly in English. Never mind the speed of your reading but focus on the sentence structure, words, and grammatical usages. Use language learning apps where you can talk to English speaking-robot. Speak out loud to yourself in English in front of a mirror. This method will improve your confidence to manage the language.

6.Identify Weak Areas

You must focus on the area that you are not confident to use. Be it your vocabulary, grammar or pronunciation, frequently practice learning them.

Whether you are a student or business professional who aspires to advance your language skills, you must spend quality time to identify and strengthen the areas that you lack in communication skills. Choose exercises and techniques that can specifically improve areas in speaking skills.

7.Speech Shadowing

Did you know Speech Shadowing can help you improve your language skills? This is the technique of imitation. This is how you try to imitate a native English speaker. Choose your favourite video or audio of a native English speaker and listen to it. Play, Listen, Speak and Record. Listen to what you’ve recorded and try to copy the speech pattern as best as you can.

8.Making Mistakes is Okay!

Even if you aren’t fluent in the English language, do not consciously avoid situations where you have to speak. Most English learners who lack confidence avoid situations where they have to speak English. Take up the opportunities and Speak, because that is the only way you can improve yourself. It is natural to avoid uncomfortable situations. But,  build your confidence in speaking English by entering the uncomfortable zone. This is how you will start to overcome the challenge, and boost your confidence.

Want to know how a student learned English?

Apart from all the above ways, one best way is to migrate to an English-speaking country. You will learn the proper accent and sounds of the language. The United States, UK, or Canada accept students from different parts of the world for study and work processes. Once you get the opportunity to engage in different activities with the English language, you will develop your language skills in a better way.

If you look for motivation to learn English, here is how a student learned the language. Here is how the trainer of Time Training Center trained a student to acquire language skills in a year. Ahamed (not the original name) couldn’t study in an English Medium School and so he spoke broken English. When he contacted the trainer, the trainer suggested he start his learning by reading books or newspapers every day, making a small dictionary of the common words and their meaning. After a week, he was assigned to learn sentence structure and formation. He learned the format of a sentence( subject-verb-object)

The second step took time. We advised him to refer to grammar books (English for Everyone Grammar Guide Practice Book and Oxford Grammar Course: Basic.) starting with simple present, past, and future tense. Grammar rules aren’t easy but he learnt simple and continuous tense forms in a month. We offered practice papers to help him understand how to frame sentences based on the time of action. Ahamed had doubts and clarifications because we know learning grammar rules isn't easy. We also asked him to refer to various applications like Duolingo, Hellotalk to improve his spoken English.

As a third step, we asked him to join our training center. That’s when Ahamed got the chance to make conversations. Direct conversations in English made him more confident. His grammatical usages improved and he started structuring good sentences. We helped him with several activities and peer learning programs to build their confidence. We made speech and debate competitions where he expressed his views in English. Little by little, his conversations became clear.

Next, we introduced various sounds to the class. This was not at all easy. Learning English sounds by non-native speakers is a challenge. And yes, it takes time to pronounce the sounds as it is! After the training session, he used to keep practicing. He tried speech shadowing techniques and built his accent. Watching English films helped him a lot to improve his pronunciation. Besides, English news channels such as CNN and BBC have been very useful in building the foundation of the English language. In a year, we could see Ahamed making clear conversations with people. All that he did not stop was ‘practicing’ and ‘communicating’.
