5 Quick ways to prepare for OET Aftermath of COVID-19

If you are currently a healthcare professional, you must be appointed to work an extra-time with extra effort. This takes away your time in preparing for OET exams. But if you aren’t working and COVID -19 has forced you to stay indoors why don’t you make the most out of this time?  During this difficult phase, figure out some easy and smart ways to pass OET. Here are some steps you can adopt into your learning schedule.

As OET exams mark your English proficiency in Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, you need to identify ways to improve all the four consistently.

1. Watch TV

To expose yourself to fine-tuned English you can use your time at home to watch TV shows. Not just any random TV show but healthcare shows that add up to your knowledge of the language used in that industry. This helps you improve your listening as well as speaking skills. Even while you relax and watch TV you must make sure to pay attention to the language used by healthcare professionals and the responses of their patients.

  • How they ask questions to understand their patient’s problem
  • How they inform, empathise or persuade their patients
  • How they clarify a patient’s doubts and assure support
  • The tone used in their approach to explaining the procedures

Some popular examples of healthcare shows are; One Born Every Minute, Hospital, Outback ER.

Online streaming platforms also feature some rich documentaries related to the health care sector.

2. Read an Article or a Blog Post

When you read an article related to healthcare, you might come across new words. This will force you to look up the meaning of those words in a dictionary. This process will help you add more words to your vocabulary and naturally improve your language. Use a thesaurus to find similar words that describe the same thing.

3. Write and Practice

Since you will be asked to write referral letters during your writing session in OET, you gotta be quick at writing them within the expected time. Grab a pen and paper and practice writing on any topic you like. It can be a description of how you spent your day. If you have no time to sit down with a notepad use a digital tool to practice writing. Slowly develop to write your content in letter format.

4. Rehearse your Role- Play

Role-playing a profession in the speaking session is a challenge for many. For example, if you are a nurse you could guess what kind of situations your job would put you in, try rehearsing those situations and train your speech to match them. Focus on how you can work on improving your fluency and flow of conversation.

5. Take Sample Tests

While you try to upgrade your skills take sample tests so that you get familiarized with the OET test pattern and type of questions asked. Once you take a test, you understand which areas need more practice and attention.

 Conclusion

We live in times when wearing masks, ensuring social distance and maintaining hand hygiene now and then has become the new normal. Medical professionals around the world are striving day and night to find a vaccine to curb the spread of this pandemic. As an OET aspirant, your dream is certainly to be the future of this medical industry that’s the backbone of the world in this crisis. The Aftermath of Covid-19 is a new reality and you will be assessed with this in mind.
